Though this is not a latest movie, as ‘latest’ also means ‘last’and as this is my last movie, here is my review.
Rating: 6/10 for its positives and 7/10 for its negatives
Resultant: (6/10)-(7)/10 = -1/10
This is the most convincingly unconvincing film I have ever watched. It carries the ups and downs of viewer’s feeling. It was a sinusoidal feeling for me throught out the film. I kept on changing my views on the film as for one scene direction seems too good but the very next moment it disappoints you a lot.
To skim the story line:
SRK is married to Preity. Their’s is a trouble marriage gifted with a child. SRK is a football player. Preity works in a fashion magazine. SRK has mom, Kiran Kher. Preity is a career centered character and seems like ignoring hubby but actually not too harsh. SRK meets Rani who doesn’t love but likes Abhishek and is about to get married to him. Amitabh is his father. SRK and Rani share good conversation and while leaving SRK meets with an accident. 4 years later, in SRK life nothing changes much. Preity moves ahead in her career. Here in Rani’s life she comes to know that she can’t be a mother. She has more care on maintaining cleanliness. Abhishek is a notty husband. They do have troubles. Rani insists on discussing and solving them but Abhishek takes it easy. Rani possesses the insecurity that she has all shortcomings in herself.
As the story progresses, Rani meets SRK again. From then friendship blossoms between them and they understand that their tastes match as they don’t like parties..etc but Abhishek and Preity like them. This way they get close while they get far from their respective spouses. This results in SRK expressing his love for Rani in interval scene.
Post interval the director deals the confusion in feelings that SRK and Rani have in their relationship. They remain as friends, spend good time but also care about their families. But they donot reveal this to others. The story gets unnecessary, unscrupulous turn when SRK finds Abhishek, hubby of Rani moving close with her in party. This results in the most ridiculous decision of SRK starting affair with Rani. This is the biggest mistake in the plot. They still remain mum with others. Seeing this Amitabh gets hospitalized and passes away. On seeing the consequences, SRK and Rani decide to end their affair and continue with their respective families. But they feel that they should not hide this truth with Abhishek and Preity and when they reveal, Preity asks SRK to leave the home, she even slaps him. Abhishek reacts too harshly with Rani and same results the case with Rani. SRK moves out of home and Rani too but they don’t know what exactly happened. SRK and Preity get divorced. Abhishek and Rani too the same case. But SRK and Rani doesn’t know that each are divorced. After 3 years, they come to know this.
Preity decides to settle with Arjun Rampal, boss of her company. Abhishek settles with a white skinned lady. The story ends when Rani finds SRK and both unite.
Highlights:
– The story line. Though this doesn’t give anything to the society and it is the most unconvincing story line, Karan Johar has to be commended for his guts and confidence in selecting such a plot to DISCUSS marriage concept.
– The title: KANK..rocks. It carries it’s essence in many situations in the story. Superb title. I’ve heard that it was first thought for Kal Ho Na hO script but as they thought that Kal hO Na hO suits that script well they went with it.
– When Amitabh comments Shahrukh Khan’s sense of humour. The way Shahrukh Khan reacts to it surprises everyone but the director steels the show with it’s finishing cut. I was thrilled with the direction in this scene.
– As there are many male/female characters in the story. The director utilized all the possible ways of making each male and female to move closely with the possible ones. The way he has utilized the trick of projecting these couples infront of other couples is good.
Firstly, When SRK and Rani meet they find Abhishek and Preity moving closely and the scenes go on…and he has used this perfectly in bringing the right gist when Amitabh and Kiran Kher see SRK and Rani’s closeness.
Though this is not a commendable idea but to the plot nothing better can be done than this.
Amitabh’s reverse satire to SRK: “na jaanE kya kyaa dEkhna paDEgaa yahaa” is marvelous.
— Interval scene where heavy scenes happen between the two couples.
– Penultimate scenes of climax.
— The scene in first half where SRK shouts at a hefty personality on troubling him on a bench and in the similar scene in second half when SRK is in grief that stout personality hugs him. This is good usage of characters.
– The scene in which SRK unnecessarily scolds Preity on their anniversary day that she doesn’t care about the family…..and the response to this by Preity is noteworthy. It boosted her character and dumped SRK character on the whole.
– The scene in which Abhishek says Rani that u have fair interest in removing dirt but main dirt is in you and it is you.
— The scene in which Abhishek and Preity meet. They discuss of their married life and decide to call their spouses and when they call SRK and Rani would already be in a phone conversation. SRK tells Rani that he has a bouquet to give to Rani and while Rani is on the way to meet SRK, a traffic signal puts on where in Preity stands beside her. They do not notice that but SRK on the other end gets surprised by this. Direction in this scene is terrific as when it shown that Rani walks ahead of Preity it also symbolizes that Rani is moving ahead of Preity in moving towards SRK. This comparison is awesome.
Lowlights:
– The story line. I’ve mentioned this as the highlight and now regarding it as the lowlight as audience feel much uneasy with the concept. Everyone expect some sort of positiveness in the films they watch. But this movie rolls fully on the negative aspects. I’m sure everyone frowns while watching this. This is enough to say that it is a bad pick.
– The most spoiling sport in this movie is SRK’s character. There is no heroism in any sort in his character. I’m quite sure that if any one other than Karan would have taken up this story they would have not convinced SRK. He would have done this for Karan’s sake. You donot gain sympathy with his character. It is the main reason for the failure of this plot.– Amitabh Bachchan is wasted in this movie. Though he has got significant role in the plot being the father of Abhishek, he is not utilized properly. A lot good cud have been done with this character. It is sure shot script mistake.
— climax. The main judging factor of any film is its climax. The penultimate scenes in climax make u to a feeling that the director has shown well the problems of breaking the marriage bond. But he falls in his own trap by uniting SRK and Rani at the end. This is not convincing. It draws negative conclusions and helps a great in not helping the film.
– snail pace narration is also a key negative point as you have to have good mood and lot of patience in watching this movie.
— It is not shown rightly as to why Rani likes and loves SRK. Abhishek is a good husband and not a bad guy at all but they have some indifferences which can be sorted out. The point of as to why Rani likes SRK is not at all convincing. They start as friends and turn as lovers. This transformation is not dealt properly. Similar is the case with SRK and Preity. They have ego clashes but that is not to such extent of breaking relations. Problem in the script is, Abhishek and Preity are pretty good in their marriage life inspire fo some indifferences but SRK and Rani are on the contrary. This gives jolt to the plot.
Final Touch:
After watching this movie I had a broad discussion regarding the content and the present day scenario with my roomie. Finally none of us could come to a conclusion regarding the movie. Such is the situation with it. I read some where that a north indian couple watched this movie in PVR and while returning husband told his wife that he’s gonna leave her. This resulted in filing a case against him by his wife. Such is the impact of this film in our own hyderabad. I’m sure it would have caused repercussions in many families.
In my view among all the aspects, an individual faces in his life course luck plays a significant role. In many things like studies, job,..etc it can be controlled by virtues like hardwork..etc..but in the most crucial phase of his/her life i.e marriage LUCK plays a predominant role but many take a wrong step here and trouble a bulk part of their rest life. It is truly said in Nuvvu Naaku Nachchav that “oka ammaayiki oka dress kaavaalanna, college admission annaa ennO options choostaam, tanaku Edi nachchitE adE ivaaDaaniki isTapaDataam kaani pelli vishayaaniki vachchEsariki peddaladE isTam anTam” ..etc.
But it is to be noted that anything and everything that can be done in choosing the right one should be done before marriage and once committed the rest efforts should be put in resolving indiffrences if any, than just mere breaking the much respected and highly accepted bond of MARRIAGE.In KANK, initially SRK and Rani feel a lot of their respective spouses and find some happiness in their friendship which develops to love and atlast before climax everyone get disturbed by this relation. Director weighs good at this point but his situation turns down when he unites this pair and gives indication that is the best possible solution !!!
I’m gonna ask my fiancee(s) to watch KANK before hand and request them to sort out any indifferences before marriage itself. Otherwise it is too hard even to believe such conflicts
in real life.
Re’ - ‘view’ing is not the case with many.
