STALIN - 8/10

STALIN .. Man for the society

(originally posted on 02/08/07)

I’m neither fan or naf of chiru. I’m writing this with true review spirit. The main reason for penning this review is after hearing to many comments regarding the film which are contrary to my views I thougt that I should express my feelings as I liked this film very much.. Infact I watched this film after reading over 20 reviews. For me this film is no way inferior to Tagore. I watched this film only in creative angle.

The concept of chain reaction being used to change society is splendid. Even, I thought of this concept of chain reaction but never ever my tiny mind explored the possibility of using it for the society. This single point is half success of the director and his execution of the concept should also be commended. I don’t understand why his direction has been under rated. For me he reached the expectations. To skim the storyline, it’s all about a Army major who loses the opportunity to serve the nation by being in Indian army even after fighting for the country in the Kargil war. He soon realizes that in the current society an individual doesn’t care for the fellow beings and he gets inspired by physically handicapped people who show immense social resonsibility by helping one another. With this he starts out a mission to serve the society for this he uses the concept of one helping three and instead of receiving thanks from them asking each one of
them to help three more and inturn telling them to ask to help three more…This concept is the heart of this film. At first Chiru finds that his concept fails but without his knowledge it gains momentum and spreads in the society by leaps and bounds. Meanwhile, Chiru while spreading this, gets into troubles which start in a small fight and leading to the rift between him and home minister ..how he succeeds in fighting for the society and how he handles the goons is rest of the story. Highlights:
– novel concept of chain reaction.
– stalin.. man for the society - title.
– introduction scene where in sarada, mother of chiru challenges the goons to even pass their street and tells the girl to sit in goons vehicle.
– a physically handicapped girl committing suicide and a person commenting it as a love faiure case then the reaction of chiru towards him is shown well.
– physically handicapped students scenes - ofcourse it is a copy of a real life incident regarding which we received many mails.
– usage of sticker on the face of photos to show the rift between sarada and khushbu who are mother and daughter.
– supreet(kaatraaj in chatrapati) handling of khushbu.
– nellore dialect characterization of prakash raj
– three songs are good - parare parare, go go gova, suryuDE selavani..
Initially in the audio I didnt like suryuDe selavani but in the film it is marvelous in carrying the emotions in the climax.
– chiru’s challenge to prakash raj. Usage of a circle is nice.
– well scene is shown well. I could not guess how the hero would come out of this situation in the few seconds that I had in guessing. Nice idea.
– usage of “what next ?” as the interval card..
– kidney donor scene for sarada.
– investigating chain reaction in reverse order.
– breaking of human chain (who are about to die due to terrorist attack), by a physically handicapped girl.
– “He is the one and the only one …Stalin Stalin is on the run” background score which is used throught out the film is excellent.
– “anni unDi saati manishiki saayam cheyyalEni vallE nijamaina vikalaangulu.” dialogue is good.
– color astrology idea.
– climax

Lowlights:
– too many hyperboles of chiru
– falling of a tree in the introduction scene of chiru.
– chiru hitting hundreds of people in the climax.
– three songs are low lights. taubare tauba, i want a spiderman, siguto chichi..
– reaching sixth floor in a shopping complex even before the lift arrives meanwhile beating goons..
– lack of comedy.
– unnecessary vulgar dialogues in the love track of chiru and trisha.
– hundreds of party activists turning mum on listening to the dialogues of chiru in the interval scene.
– Chiru’s hindi and english in kargil war.

Final touch:
Murugadoss, this short man is too tall in ideas. Kudos to the director for his concept and slick direction. Ofcourse I do agree with the comment that the mixing of the concept with political drama did not stick well but even in that, director did his best. Trisha added glamour though didnot fit to chiru. Trisha’s expressions especially in go go gova song gain interest. There are many references of politics this shows that they are intentionally unintentional.

For me even after reading 20 reviews, watching the film, writing this review I’m keen on ‘re’-'view’ing the film.
