FMB: India bans smoking from 2nd October
Puff and pay!
The health ministry has issued a directive prohibiting smoking in all government and public buildings from October 2 this year, reports the Times of India.
The directive, issued under Prohibition of Smoking in Public Places Rules, 2008, does not consider roads and parks as public places. However, small cafes, restaurants, schools, pubs or discotheques, stadia, airports, hospitals and bus stands come under public places.
People caught smoking will be charged Rs 200 ($4.5). The fine will be increased to Rs 1000 ($22). Offices will be charged Rs 5,000 ($112) for each employee found smoking in its premises. Hotels with 30 or more rooms and restaurants with seating capacity of 30 persons or more can have enclosures for smoking with separate ventilation arrangement as per the Act.
NGOs, train ticket collectors, bus conductors, school headmasters will be empowered to impose the fine. States such as Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Gujarat are gearing up to put the ban in place. According to health minister A Ramadoss, a similar policy by England and Scotland last year resulted in 45,000 people giving up smoking in 10 months.
