How did it all happen ???

FPS:

Chetan Bhagat was working for an investment bank in Hong Kong. He was always thinking of penning his college days. He observed that it is a common belief that once a guy enters IIT he is settled. But, he knew well that there are some dark shades in IIT that a student experiences especially if he can’t maintain his grades. He added fiction to the real funny things he has observed during his stay in IIT Delhi and brought out ‘Five Point Someone’ which is all about the things not to do at IIT. It took 8 years for him to pen this. First five years he had been thinking of putting his thoughts as a story. For 3 years he struggled to make it entertaining and user friendly. He broke all the rules of regular books. Used real language of people. Had 9 drafts of ‘Five Point Someone’ to get enough confidence. Struggled a lot to convince publishers. Had an hard time with many of them. At last was successful with Rupa Publishers, Delhi. Priced the book as low as possible @ Rs 95.

IIT factor helped a lot initally. Mouth talk spreadChetan Bhagat Five Point Someone Itz All About Chetan Bhagat 1 like a wild fire that the book is all about the dark secrets of IIT life. However it is a convincing plot of three friends Alok, Hari, Ryan who mess their first quiz in IIT and from then screw up their lives struggling to maintain grades. The way it is narrated is splendid with witty humour and required spice laced through out the book. Ryan is carefree, Alok is (s)careful and Hari is balanced with imbalanced thoughts. Theres a beautiful Neha added who adds an item to the plot. Placing her as the daughter of Prof. Cherian gave enough scope to bring in drama of trauma. Emotions are also worked out well by bringing in the plot of Neha’s brother who commits suicide upon not meeting his father’s expectations of getting into IIT. Its a fun read(ride) and becomes nostalgic on many occasions.

Choosing the IIT element was itself half a success. After Cinema, Politics, IIT is the brand that enjoys celebrity/salability status in India. Chetan was a bit apprehensive about the response of FPS but it has taken the print industry by storm and was a sensational success. He became an overnight star over his numerous days work.

ON@TCC:

Having seen the splendid success of FPS there was enormous pressure on Chetan on what would be his next venture. He could succeed in surprising everyone by choosing the ‘Call Center’ life as his second concept. He could meet, infact surpass many people’s expectations with his second work and ‘One Night @ The Call Center’ was a big big hit.

Chetan Bhagat One Night at the Call Center Itz All About Chetan Bhagat 1He placed the youth factor and interesting elements in Call center superbly and won the hearts of millions of his book readers. He got good help from his cousins working in call centres and personally visited some call centres to understand the environment. He had enough substance like layoffs, night shifts, pay packages, Bossism..etc with the call center backdrop. He carved wonderful characters like a troubled love pair with the conflict of comparatively less package for the guy, a girl striving hard to click in modeling, a married lady sacrificing everything for her family yet getting ditched, a gen-x guy who is an innovator all under a Bad Boss, struggling to save their jobs .

The main highlight of the book is the not the content but the narration mode he chose. He started with a fairy tale of traveling in a train and a girl sitting beside narrating him the story on the condition that he would pen it as his second book. This prologue is so mesmerizing that one would vote full marks just by reading this.

3:

After the success of his first two books ‘Chetan Bhagat’ has become a brand in India. He has got huge fan following from diverse fields. Even top notch writers/critics…are dumbstruck at his success with seemingly simpler works.

Now he is a role model and holds lot ofChetan Bhagat The Three Mistakes of my Life Itz All About Chetan Bhagat 1 responsibility. There were many speculations about his next work. He took his time and has comeup with yet another interesting youth aspect of ‘Enterpreneurship’. His third book ‘The 3 Mistakes of My Life’ is all about Business, Cricket and Religion. Its the story of 3 young men Govind, Ishaan, Omi of Ahmedabad who start a cricket shop in 2000. How they handle situations like earthquakes, religious intolerance..forms the crux of the story.

It is already receiving very good response all over. As in his second book he winded another fairy tale to start this book. He took the concept of a guy mailing him while committing suicide. Though it looks overboard it is an interesting thought that can’t be put off. He chose this medium to find a gripping mode in tracing the guy, knowing the matters that lead to the suicide attempt which forms the story of the book.

Many film industry bigwigs sensed the worth of his works. There has been too much of competition to transform his works onto the celluloid. Firstly ‘One Night @ The Call Center’ has been made into Salman, Katrina, Sharman…starrer ‘Hello’ by Atul Agnihotri. Chetan has also provided Screenplay, Dialogues for the film apart from the story.

‘Idiots’ starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor…is an adaptation of ‘Five Point Someone’ is under production. It is being directed by Rajkumar Hirani.

There are already talks to own the rights of making a movie on ‘The 3 Mistakes Of My Life’.

He has been getting numerous invitations for seminars from colleges/corporates.

– He is also working on some film projects by providing script/screenplay.
– He once wanted to be a chef.
– He is wise enough to use contemporary things like the magic that Rand function does in MS Word.
– He says he is indebted to Bill Gates for his products like MS Word.
– He worked in Hong Kong for 11 years and recently relocated to Mumbai.

Five Point someone is that book which really inspired me a lot and helped me to do well. When I was reading the book sometimes I realised things are happening with me,I’m also an engineer.I just went to college forcefully though mathematics was not my first choice but in our country each and every parents want to see their child as an engineer or doctor prior.and in result some really show they all effort to get a degree while some commits suicide to live a better life with God…and I was one of those people who think iitn’s are something different but now I realised everyone has the same story.I was never supposed that I would continue my studies after engineering coz my 4 yrs.were really scary.comments from the teachers, taunting smile on different faces, getting poor grades…that was my life in college.
But things are now changed ,everyone has brain the only thing we should know how to utilised our ability.and now I got it and ‘m going abroad for higher studies.
I really appreciate chetan bhagat and ‘m sure he would give us more golden books…..

If 3 Mistakes is going to be filmed, see that you have a better crew. Otherwise it will be screwed like Hello.
One suggestion, Omi demands an ending note than Ali.

One suggestion, Omi fits well for an ending note than Ali. Better add something for him which makes people more nostalgic.

  • Anikris says:

    Hi Chetan ,

Your book gave me a very good personal break after few years where I got immersed with work, kids and life.. I must appreciate you for the fact that it really takes lot of guts to present truths of one’s life in a book though the book is about a romantic story.Writing about the mental conversations can actually result in detraction from lot of near and dear peeople which is uncalled for, however without them there is no spice in reading a book.
Most of the loving couples can relate to the story presented by you and they don’t need to necessarily belong to two different states . There are lot of elements in the book which are applicable to most of the love marriages and need not necessarily hail from two different states. I personally could relate to my own for lot of reasons like working on parents for making the relationship work, tiffs b/w families for simple differences in culture during ceremonies, one family proving out to be having a more better hold than the other family etc…I cannot believe myself that amidst my busy work, I am searching for your family pictures and getting to know about you and writing this to you, being a thorough professional that I am.. I want to come out of the trans of : two states” My wishes to your family and Kids.
Luvd the book .. keep writing.Hope u get time to read this mail
