Its the time some singers can be counted as sinners for their injustice to lyrics. There are very few singers who are real swimmers irrespective of the language they sing in. Karthik, is one of such most versatile and happening singers. His voice suits the best for all young heroes. He has become a mandatory singer for many music directors. Karthik can’t think anything beyond singing. This handsome, humble, dedicated singer has got many offers as hero but declined them politely. He has an interesting past that drove him into the industry. Go ahead to explore it…

Background:
Few years back Karthik was a regular college goer . He had good interest in music and was learning Carnatic music right from his school days. He was singing for his college band. They used to participate regularly in IIT Madras Fest ‘Sarang’. He never dreamt that he would become a professional singer. He is an ardent fan of AR Rahman. It was one of his life ambitions to see ARR atleast once. He used to call studios but the studio manager or someone used to pick and keep the phone. Singer Srinivas(’Priya Priya Champoddey’ song in Jeans) is a good friend of Karthik’s cousin. Srinivas introduced Karthik to ARR. He could not believe this and was on Cloud 9.
At that time ARR asked him whether he can sing. He said yes and ARR asked him to sing something for him. He was surprised and sang a song. ARR was impressed and advised him to look into singing as a career. Karthik could not believe this as meeting ARR was itself a memorable moment for him and ARR giving such a compliment was totally unbelievable. He left everything and again started practising regularly. However, he could not get a singing chance immediately.
Atlast the debute day came in an interesting way. It was one of his friend’s birthday. They went to a snooker parlour. They planned a surprise birthday gift for their friend and wanted to spend till midnight there. Only one of them was having a cell phone. Rahman was looking for some fresh voices for chorus. Singer Srinivas was trying to reach Harish Raghavendra, Tippu, Gopal Rao..etc He could not get one of them right away and so was trying to reach Karthik through his residence number. Karthik’s Mom was trying to call to his friend’s cell phone but the signal was poor in the snooker parlour. Srinivas was continuously calling Karthik’s Mom for about 8 times and his Mom literally started crying as she knows the importance of that chance and how much interested Karthik was in singing.
It was around 12 that they came upstairs. Atlast he attened his Mom’s call and on knowing this rushed to the studio on his bike. It was for the Pukar movie and he had to sing chorus with Tippu, Harish. It was his debute which was finished in 30 Mins at around 1 AM. He could not believe what had happened. Even none of his friends took it seriously when he told them that he sang for Rahman. Unfortunately that song in Pukar didn’t come out. He started singing chorus with Tippu, Harish for about an year.
Rahman always used to get confused in indentifying Tippu and Karthik. He always mistook Karthik to
Tippu. One day during a chorus session, Rahman observed all the singers and said ‘You the guy without spectacles stay back and others can leave’. It was Karthik. He took it very seriously and was knowing that Rahman would ask him to sing and its a lovely chance to prove his mettle. He decided to take it as a do or die situation. Rahman asked him to sing an aalaap. He was singing and Rahman was giving some suggestions by playing the chords. Rahman was expecting more grief in the aalaap and thus Karthik forgot about himself and got very much immersed into it by singing continuously, closing his eyes. After some time, he opened his eyes and saw that everyone was laughing.
Rahman was standing next to him and said ‘Good job. You did well’.
Next day Rahman asked him to come for a track with which he was trying something new and if it works he will use it. It was for the movie ‘Jodi’. He was nervous but Rahman was jovial with him and made him feel comfortable. After the recording Rahman said its good. This is how he got his first break with Rahman.
None would be knowing how a song comes out under Rahman. Because it undergoes lots of transformations. ‘Girl Friend’ song in Boys was the one everyone believed beforehand that its gonna rock. When Karthik started singing this, Rahman interrupted and asked him to sing like a saxaphone. It was interesting to sing like an instrument.
That brought lot of variety to the song. And the rest is history.

Ask him what music means to him. “What am I without this music? A nothing,” he quickly responds.
Thus begins the conversation with the 28-year-old singer. A clear sweep in the most recent albums in Tamil: Vennila kabadi kuzhu, Vaaranam Aayiram; a debut in Bengali, a couple of Kannada songs and Behka in Ghajini (Hindi), the singer calls 2008 an eventful year. And of course, there was Arerey, the 2007-chartbuster in the Telugu film Happy Days, that he has sung in its Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada versions too.
“Though my first film for Rahman sir was actually in Hindi, I’d never done a solo in Hindi so far. We recorded the song a real long time ago, and then one day, Rahman calls me and says Murugadoss, Aamir and Prasoon Joshi (lyricist) like my track Behka a lot. It clearly is my wackiest song. To put it in a line, ‘Behka’ is my hottest girlfriend ever!” he explains, adding that musical boundaries are clearly blurring today, finding more acceptance than ever before.
“Like the clean melody of Arere, that you’d never associate with Telugu, which is expected to be louder than that. Our music sensitivities are different but the boundary is definitely blurring,” he explains.
“Anything that’s good deserves a market. If there’s not one, I’ll create it,” he then confidently states. “And I hope to get myself a new concept to work on. However, I don’t plan to confine myself to these alone, I’d want to write the lyrics myself too,” he pauses and adds

Surabhion 27 Feb 2009 at 9:07 am 69Just for some information to you guys: “Bommarilu” (personally my favourite film) has been remade into bengali and I THINK (cos I don’t know its exact name) the bengali version is called Bhalobasa Bhalobasa. As expected just like the tamil remake….er better say copy “Santosh Subramaniam”….. this one too is a frame by frame copy of Bommarilu and Devi Sri Prasad is composing the music for this one too. Appude ippudo this time has been sung by India’s most overrated singer:the one and only Shaan and the bengali appudo ippudo sounds like a bhajan.No one can match Siddharth’s youthful singing(even if he’s one of bollywood’s most sought after singer). The shooting and the acting:well, its sick and the bengali heroine is….uhhh!!!!…….a cartoon. What both the bengali and tamil ones couldn’t copy was of course the feel of the film.I hope the hindi remake doesn’t turn out to be another frame by frame copy of Bommarilu as well. Man!!!!! Hrithik Roshan????? Best Actor??????? What a joke! If I’m not wrong…..well, I’m never wrong…….he got this award last year for Dhoom2 but wasn’t Hrithik playing the role of the villian….I mean he played a negative role right? Then why the hek was he…..Oh lets forget it. Even Siddhu lost the best debut awrd to Upen Patel, why? ………I still wonder cos 36 China town was a total bakwaas and that guy didn’t even dub for himself. I wish Amir had won the best actor award for Rang De basanti than Hritik for Dhoom2. I wouldn’t have minded had Javed Ali (who sang Jash e Bahara) or Rashid Ali (who sang Kabhi kabhi Aditi) had got the best singer award but that again went to Sukhwinder Singh. Well if u ask me Haule Haule is a damn BORING and EASY song. Koi bhi aira gaira natthu khaira use gaa sakta hai. Aishwarya and Asin desrved the best actress award more than Priyanka and Ghajini was directed WAY better by AR Murgoddos than by Ashutosh (Jodha Akbar). Most students cudn’t recognize it in the 1st place upar se Facebook par iske kihlaaf ek community khul gayaa….If I’m EVERRR granted a wish I wud wish 4 a world where there is no mehnat, no pasina, no rona dhona, no Aryabhattya, no Einstein, no Darwin, no Mendelleev, No Bohr ……….basically NO STUDIES…
