Synopsis:

Kalikalam deals with the contemporary lives of typical middle class families. Chandramohan’s family comprises an idealistic housewife Jayasudha, a talkative father Suttivelu, an irresponsible unemployed son Saikumar, daughter Rani who is yet to get married. Chandramohan is the sole bread earner for the family.

Saikumar falls in love with an orphan girl. She becomes pregnant. Rani is in love with her neighbour whose father is a miser. He demands 50,000 as dowry. The only lifeline they see is Voluntary Retirement and on his way to get the money, Chandramohan meets with a train accident and dies.

Surprisingly all their financial problems get resolved owing to the demise of Chandramohan. Post marriages the true colors of Saikumar and Rani are exposed. All of a sudden Chandramohan returns. Now the family plays hide and seek, as the children do not want public to know about their father’s return. Saikumar even wipes of the sindhoor of his mother when a LIC officer doubts it. They go to the extent of performing death anniversary of their father. Unable to tolerate the children’s behavior, the couple flees from that place.

This film depicts the plight of middle class lives with great precision.

Chandramohan is the sole bread earner for the family.

Inorder to do their son’s marriage they’ve to do their daughter’s marriage first and for this the bridegroom’s father demands 50,000 as dowry. The only lifeline they see is Voluantary Retirment which amputates their only source of income. On his way to get the money of VRS, Chandramohan meets with a train accident and dies.

Surprisingly all their financial problems get resolved owing to the demise of Chandramohan. Post marriages the true colors of Saikumar and Rani are exposed. All of a sudden Chandramohan returns saying that luckily he got rescued from the accident. Now the family plays hide and seek, as the children do not want public to know about the return of their father. But things get complicated day by day. Saikumar even wipes off the sindhoor of his mother when a LIC officer doubts it. They even perform the death anniversary of their father when he is hiding in their home itself. Unable to tolerate the present day behavior of children towards their parents, the couple flees from that place.

This film depicts the plight of middle class lives with great precision.

This is one of my all time favorite movies. It has splendid story, extra ordinary screenplay, hilarious and thought provoking dialogues and flawless performances.
