Katha – Movie Review
Katha – Movie Review
Katha – 4/10
What is it all about ?
It is the story of a mentally disturbed patient, Genelia who comes to Araku and joins as a School teacher. Arun is a new film Director, who is in Araku working for his script and film. He becomes friend of Genelia. Genelia suffers from many phobias related to loneliness, blood and hallucinations. She witnesses a murder of a girl and no one believes that it ever happened. She too gets confused and finally realizes that she is still suffering from mental illness and decides to go back to mental asylum. Did the murder really happen ? Did Genelia recover from her psychic problems ? ….forms the rest of the story.
Lowlights:
- Story: It is an unexciting story. We have seen heroine roles suffering from Psychosis in films like ‘Chandramukhi’. ‘Katha’ explored another angle of creating stories using such characters. But it turned out be unappealing.
- Screenplay: Dead slow pace spoiled the content of the movie. Last 30 minutes is only the saving grace of the movie where in the tempo is good. Had the entire film carried similar pace, it would have been a different STORY. The first half of the movie and the first half of the second half are boring.
Highlights:
– There are some creative sparkles here and there in the movie.
- The starting titles are shown in an interesting way.
- The gipsy used by Hero, is well designed.
Lines like:
directOR die, Once upon a time..time..time……time out…Writer’s block.
are interesting.
– Some dialogues are funny:
Eg:
Genelia to Arun: naaku ikkada (Mental hospital) seat dorakadam kastam yemi kaadu.
– Genelia is an asset to the film. She is pretty. Her costumes are excellent.
– Arun is ok. He has looks of Ram and inflexible body language of Varun Sandesh.
– Music is average. ‘taka taka’ song sounds good.
Final Touch:
Just Yellow Banner has gained good fame and following with films like ‘Aitey’, ‘Anukokunda Oka Roju’. As this film is coming after a gap of 3 years there were many expectations on it. Gunnam Ganga Raju stated that for the last 3 years he listened to many stories and nothing excited him. He said he was impressed with ‘Katha’. This has raised more expectations on the film and many were eager to know what impressed such a creative maker. But the film doesn’t offer anything extra ordinary and one might wonder if this is a Just Yellow’s product.
The Story is average. Direction by Srinivas Raga is ok. Films like ‘Mantra’ come into our minds while watching it. The last 30 minutes of the film is a plus.
On the whole it is a disappointing STORY from Just Yellow.
